Today we are covering the last topic in unit 3 (Simplifying Expressions by combining like terms and using the distributive property). Students will have a homework assignment to complete tonight over this concept. We will continue to practice this last concept tomorrow and Wednesday. The study guide is also due Wednesday. The study guide answers have already been posted to Weebly for your child's use. Please make sure your child has checked their study guide before coming to class Wednesday. Also, please have them mark specific questions that they may have concerns with. We will test on Thursday and Friday. 2nd and 6th periods will test on Thursday, and 1st and 5th periods will test on Friday. Students should also make sure that their spiral notebooks are neat, complete, and in order for their spiral check on Thursday. Below I am attaching some practice problems with simplifying expressions that students can go through at home. Due to having exams this week, I will not hold tutoring after school this week. Instead, students have the option to come to me for tutoring during A squared this week. They can come Tuesday or Wednesday with specific concerns/questions that they have. Thanks also to everyone who donated 2-liter drinks and cups. The dance was a success!!! J
After today’s quiz, we will continue to practice simplifying expressions by combining like terms. To help practice this skill, I have assigned a short homework assignment this weekend entitled, "How Does a Hawaiian Baritone Laugh?" Simplifying expressions is a topic that students sometimes struggle with; therefore, I have included some extra practice problems on the back of today’s homework sheet if your child needs more practice while at home. It is a riddle sheet entitled, “What Do You Call Two Railroad Trains After a Head-on Collision?” This sheet has students practice two important concepts - simplifying and evaluating expressions. I am attaching the answer sheet for you. Thanks and have a great weekend! J
We are nearing the end of unit 3. Exams are scheduled for next Thursday and Friday, December 18th and 19th. The exam will be the unit 3 test. This will mean that the unit 3 study guide will be due on Wednesday the 17th. As of today, students are capable of completing #’s 1-70. I will post the answers here to Weebly. Students will also have a spiral check on the day that they test. In the meantime, students are learning to use the distributive property to simplify expressions. A distributive property and expressions’ quiz will be given this Friday. #’s 55-70 and 85-87 are good study guide problems to use to help prepare for this quiz. Students will also be given several note pages and activities that can also be used for studying purposes. The grades portion of Infinite Campus will go down for parents beginning on the 15th, so please check Infinite Campus before then so you will be aware of your child's average going into the exams. I am also including two PowerPoints that I am using in class this week.
Today I returned the unit 3 mini-test. We went over all of the correct answers in class, and students were asked to bring the test home for you to see. Instructionally, we are continuing with unit 3 by evaluating expressions. We will continue to practice this concept through Wednesday and then quiz on Thursday. We will then move to using the distributive property to simplify expressions. We will finish unit 3 in the next couple of weeks, so please help monitor your child to make sure they are keeping up-to-date with their study guide.
It is time again for the math department to hold its annual Winterfest at BMS dance. The dance is this Friday, December 5th, from 3:00 – 5:30. All proceeds go towards purchasing math instructional supplies. To keep our costs low and maximize our profits, so we may purchase as many supplies as possible, we are asking parents to donate cups and 2-liter drinks. We need 16 oz. cups (“Solo” size) and bottles of Coke, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, and Orange. Any donations that you can send in will be greatly appreciated. Donations can be brought to my room.
Drinks, pizza, and candy will be available to purchase. We will also be selling Santa and elf hats. |
