Multiplication Fluency

8/25/2014

I have noticed that careless mistakes are “killing” some of the students’ grades especially when it comes to multiplication and division mistakes. For this reason, I will begin giving multiplication fluency tests during the A squared time. Students have to be able to complete 100 multiplication facts (1-9) in three minutes. The goal is for every student to eventually make 100%. Students will continue to take a fluency test each week or two until they can score 100%. The fluency test does count towards the math average as a daily grade; however, as the grade improves with each attempt, I will replace the grade in my grade book with the higher grade. In order to help your child succeed at this task I am including two websites. both sites are listed under the "helpful websites" tab.
This is a website that lets students practice their multiplication facts.
It will help them work on learning them as well as their speed. It
allows them to practice a mixture or focus on specific tables.
This website creates worksheets for a variety of skills. It creates worksheets in a variety of formats and on many of them you can stipulate what you want. It is fast and no two worksheets are the      same. This means you can create many forms of the same worksheet.

 1. Under Worksheets by Topic, click on  multiplication.

 2.
Go to 1 or 5 minute Drills.

 3.  The range should be 1-9 and click on 100 problems.

 4.
Click Create. Each time create is clicked a different version is
created.

It is great for students to practice by hand as well as orally.

  • The unit 1 study guide is due on Thursday, August 28th. The unit 1 test is scheduled for Friday, August 29th. At the end of each unit, I will post the answers to the study guide under the "study guides" tab. It will be the students’ responsibility to check and go over their study guide at home. While at home they should rework any problems missed and try to figure out their mistake. Class time  will then be given to answer any questions that students’ could not figure out on their own. Because I post the answers, no credit will be given for just having answers on the study guide. Work/proof must accompany the answers. At this point, I have covered all sections on the study guide except for  dividing fractions.  I will post the study guide answers  by Tuesday.

  • While students are testing on Friday (August 29th), I will conduct a spiral notebook check. This grade will count as a 20 point daily grade. Students will be given a rubric to place inside the front cover of their spiral. The rubric states how the 20 points are awarded. When grading, I will check to see that the spiral is complete, organized, and neat. If your child has been absent or has an incomplete notebook, they can check mine out during free time to help get theirs in order. I will also post a copy of the rubric under the "helpful documents" tab.

  • Quiz tomorrow (decimals, GCF, and LCM). Expect word problems that will show knowledge and application of concepts
  • Today the students received their first opportunity for extra credit in the form of completing a challenge. These challenges are located on the back bulletin board. Three to four challenges will be available each nine week period worth anywhere from 2 – 4 bonus points. This first challenge is due by September 3rd.. Students may get help from peers, parents, other teachers, and by using the
computer. Basically I told them that anyone or anything can assist them with a challenge except for me. Each challenge must include the work/explanation as to how the answer was obtained. Accumulated bonus points from the nine weeks will be added at the end of the nine weeks to calculate final averages. A copy of the challenge procedures are located under the "helpful documents" tab.
  • After tomorrow's quiz, we will begin learning how to rewrite math problems using the distributive property format. We will then move into converting fractions to decimals and finish up the unit

1.    Friday's quiz was returned yesterday. We went over the correct answers in class yesterday. Students  were asked to bring the quiz home last night for you to see. If your child did not perform well, please sit down and go over the quiz again with them. I noticed many students were having difficulties borrowing when subtracting and making  multiplication errors. Many students are also struggling with
the process of long division, especially when the divisor is also a decimal. This material will be seen again on future quizzes and  tests. Below are two websites in addition to the online textbook that you
can use at home to help your children. These sites are also included under "helpful websites".

2.    Please  remember to check your child’s agenda each night. Homework is now being given and several students have already received zeros or incompletes.

3.  Also please make sure that your child is keeping up with their unit 1 study guide so  that it does not become overwhelming for them. They are able to complete Parts A and B at this time.

Infinite Campus is OPEN to parents TODAY!!!
Please set up an account and check out your child's grades (Instructions are under "helpful documents"). Infinite Campus is updated on a weekly basis.

Tutoring

8/8/2014

The decision to attend tutoring should be on a week-to-week basis. Tutoring is designed for those students who are struggling with current topics being taught in class. Students will probably not need to attend every week, just the weeks that they are struggling in class. If a student wishes to stay for tutoring, he or she should bring in a note from home, or parents can send an email by Tuesday of the week the child is staying. I tutor on an individual basis, so students need to come prepared with the topic and/or assignment(s) that they wish to work on during the tutoring session. For more tutoring information, please visit the AC math homepage.

Let me begin by saying that we have gotten off to a wonderful start in AC math this year, and a HUGE thanks to those of you who donated supplies. It is GREATLY appreciated!!!
We are currently in unit 1 (Number Sense Fluency). In this unit we cover:
  • operations with decimals
  • factors/multiples
  • GCF/LCM
  • Distributive property
  • Dividing Fractions  (modeling&
    algorithm)
  • Converting fractions to decimals

The students were given their study guides for unit 1 on Monday. This is to be completed over the course of unit 1 (approx. 3 weeks). I have instructed the students to begin now and complete a few problems
each night, as concepts are covered, so that it doesn’t become overwhelming.  Study guides will always be due the day before the unit test. I don’t have an exact date for the unit 1 test at this time, but I will let you and the students know an exact date as the time draws closer. The study guide is also located under the study guide tab incase your child loses theirs and needs to print another one.

Homework is now being assigned, so check your child’s agenda nightly to help ensure that they are prepared for class the next day.

This week we are reviewing operations with decimals, and the first quiz is planned for Friday, the 8th. Your child has notes and practice problems in their math spirals and binders to assist them with studying. Helpful math websites are also posted on this sit

I will post updates here on a regular basis, so be sure to check weekly to stay current on what is going on in AC math. We also have a team weebly site that can be accessed for further information.

I know this is a lot of information at once, so if you have questions please don’t hesitate to email. Thanks for a great start!
Don’t forget open house is on August 14th from 6:00 – 7:30.
