- This week we are continuing our study of GCF and LCM. A quiz over these concepts will be given on either Wednesday or Thursday of this week. The quiz will also contain a review section over decimals. Expect word problems that will show knowledge and application of concepts.
- This week the students will receive their first opportunity for extra credit in the form of completing a challenge. These challenges are located on the back bulletin board. Six to eight challenges will be available each semester worth anywhere from 2 – 4 bonus points. This first challenge is due by September 8th. Students may get help from peers, parents, other teachers, and by using the
computer. Basically I told them that anyone or anything can assist them with a challenge except for me. Each challenge must include the work/explanation as to how the answer was obtained. Accumulated bonus points from the semester will be added at the end of the semester to calculate final averages. A copy of the challenge procedures are located under the "helpful documents" tab. - After this week's quiz, we will begin learning how to rewrite math problems using the distributive property format.
- By the end of the week, students will be capable of completing parts A, B, and C of their study guide.
- I will also be returning the Six Flags task and going over it during A squared this week. This was a group task that students completed last week to demonstrate their knowledge of decimals in a real world setting.
- Please remember to check infinite campus on a weekly basis to stay up to date on your child's current average.

1. Last Friday's decimal quiz was returned today. We went over the correct answers in class and students were asked to bring the quiz home tonight for you to see. If your child did not perform well, please sit down and go over the quiz again with them. I noticed many students were having difficulties borrowing when subtracting and making multiplication errors. Many students are also struggling with
the process of long division, especially when the divisor is also a decimal. This material will be seen again on future quizzes and tests. Below are two websites in addition to the online textbook that you can use at home to help your children. These sites are also included under "helpful websites".
2. Please remember to check your child’s agenda each night. Homework is now being given and several students have already received zeros or incompletes. 3. Also please make sure that your child is keeping up with their unit 1 study guide so that is does not become overwhelming for them. Part A should be complete by now and we will begin looking at Part B concepts tomorrow. Infinite Campus is OPEN to parents TODAY!!!
Please set up an account and check out your child's grades (Instructions are under "helpful documents"). Infinite Campus is updated on a weekly basis. The decision to attend tutoring should be on a week-to-week basis. Tutoring is designed for those students who are struggling with current topics being taught in class. Students will probably not need to attend every week, just the weeks that they are struggling in class. If a student wishes to stay for tutoring, he or she should bring in a note from home, or parents can send an email by Tuesday of the week the child is staying. I tutor on an individual basis, so students need to come prepared with the topic and/or assignment(s) that they wish to work on during the tutoring session. For more tutoring information, please visit the AC math homepage.
Let me begin by saying that we have gotten off to a wonderful start in AC math this year, and a HUGE thanks to those of you who donated supplies. It is GREATLY appreciated!!! We are currently in unit 1 (Number Sense Fluency). In this unit we cover:
The students were given their study guides for unit 1 on Thursday. This is to be completed over the course of unit 1 (approx. 3 weeks). I have instructed the students to begin now and complete a few problems each night, as concepts are covered, so that it doesn’t become overwhelming. Study guides will always be due the day before the unit test. I don’t have an exact date for the unit 1 test at this time, but I will let you and the students know an exact date as the time draws closer. The study guide is also located under the study guide tab in case your child loses theirs and needs to print another one. Homework is now being assigned, so check your child’s agenda nightly to help ensure that they are prepared for class the next day. This week we are reviewing operations with decimals, and the first quiz is planned for Thursday/ Friday depending on the readiness of the students. Your child has notes and practice problems in their math spirals and binders to assist them with tudying. Helpful math websites are also posted on this site. I will post updates here on a regular basis, so be sure to check weekly to stay current on what is going on in AC math. We also have a team weebly site that can be accessed for further information. http://coolcatsbms.weebly.com I know this is a lot of information at once, so if you have questions please don't hesitate to email. Thanks for a great start! Don't forget open house is on August 20th from 6:00-7:30. |
